Self-paced learning on clean energy and disinformation — go as deep as you need

Five structured modules covering everything from the fundamentals of disinformation to practical counter-narrative skills. Take the full course or explore individual modules. Free, open access, no registration required.

Introduction

The POWER online course was built for anyone who wants to understand the disinformation landscape around clean energy — and do something about it. Whether you’re a student encountering these narratives for the first time, a professional looking to sharpen your analytical toolkit, or an educator preparing course materials, the five modules take you from foundational concepts to applied skills at your own pace. Each module combines interactive content, real case studies and practical exercises grounded in research carried out across four European countries.

Module 1 — Introduction to Disinformation

Module 1 | Introduction to Disinformation

What it is, how it works, why it spreads. Covers the key concepts — misinformation, disinformation and malinformation — and the mechanics of the information ecosystem. Explores how false narratives travel, what emotional and social mechanisms they exploit, and why clean energy has become a target. The foundation for everything that follows.

Module 2 — Clean Energy Sources

Module 2 | Clean Energy Sources

Know what you’re defending. An accessible overview of the five main clean energy technologies — solar, wind, hydro, geothermal and biomass — plus smart grids, batteries, EVs and green hydrogen. Includes interactive energy mix data from Romania, Spain, Malta and Moldova, and connects clean energy to the European Green Deal and the SDGs.

Module 3 — Disinformation Narratives & Modus Operandi

Module 3 | Disinformation Narratives & Modus Operandi

Recognise the playbook. The eight main disinformation drivers identified in POWER’s research, with their modus operandi, spread mechanisms and the counter-arguments best suited to each. Includes a deep-dive case study on the Spain blackout (April 2025) and how it generated a wave of renewable energy disinformation in real tim

 Module 4 — Science Communication

Module 4 | Science Communication

Turn knowledge into communication. Principles of effective science communication: clarity, accuracy, audience analysis and storytelling. Covers debunking vs. prebunking, the truth sandwich, inoculation theory and practical counter-narrative strategies. Includes a storyboard workshop for developing visual counter-narratives.

Module 5 — Practical Applications

Module 5 | Practical Applications

Apply everything. The capstone module. Teams integrate their knowledge into a full counter-narrative campaign: target audience, key messages, channels and timeline. Includes peer-reviewed presentations and the post-test to measure learning across the full course.
