ÉLITE Fuenlabrada”: A geolocated fanfic on renewable energy and the energy transition

by | Nov 7, 2025 | Events

As part of the Madrid Science and Innovation Week 2025, the Ciberimaginario Research Group delivered the activity “ÉLITE Fuenlabrada: a geolocated fanfic on renewable energy and the energy transition”, an educational and creative experience developed within the framework of the eComciencia and POWER projects. This initiative represents a further POWER communication, dissemination and public engagement action, designed to bring sustainability and the energy transition closer to young audiences through participatory and narrative-based methods.

Held on Thursday, 6 November 2025, the activity invited vocational education students to imagine a fictional new season of the TV series Élite, set on the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) Fuenlabrada Campus and its surrounding urban environment. In this storyline, the protagonists faced real-world challenges linked to the energy transition, power outages, and misinformation about renewable energy.

Throughout the session, participants explored different locations across the campus and the neighbourhood, using a mobile application to log places and design scenes that merged youth fiction with realistic situations connected to sustainability and climate change. Each stop on the route encouraged reflection on clean energy sources, the environmental impact of everyday consumption habits, and the ways in which misleading narratives and disinformation can shape social perceptions of renewable solutions.

The activity aimed to foster critical thinking and media and information literacy (MIL) through participatory methodologies integrating storytelling, technology and scientific communication. At the end of the workshop, students produced an interactive map featuring the scenes and plots they had created, resulting in an open educational resource that can be reused by other groups in future editions.

Organised by the Ciberimaginario Research Group and the XR COM LAB at Universidad Rey Juan Carlos, the experience turned the campus into a space for creative exploration and science communication.

This proposal aligns with the broader line of work developed by Ciberimaginario through the eComciencia and POWER projects, focused on strengthening responsible communication on sustainability and energy, promoting citizen participation, and exploring new ways of communicating science through immersive technologies and co-creation processes.
